Following research published by (Lambert et al, 2020) and the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), patients are experiencing hair thinning or significant hair loss as a result of infection with COVID-19. However, there is still no clear answer as to whether these incidents are related to stress due to the pandemic or to the infection itself.
Why is this happening;
In Dermatology, however, we know that often in conditions of intense stress, operations, illnesses or serious infections, intense hair loss is observed a few months later, something called telogen effluvium or alopecia. It occurs when more hairs than normal enter the telogen phase (shedding phase) of the hair growth life cycle at the same time. A fever or illness can cause more hairs to enter the resting phase. However, the hair remains in the telogen phase for a period of 2-4 months and then falls out, therefore hair loss is not observed immediately after the event or infection.
Even if you’ve never developed a fever or COVID-19, you may be experiencing increased hair loss. Psychological stress due to the pandemic or other factors can also cause more than normal hair loss. In this case, only when the stress stops will the hair loss stop
Hair returns to norma
The normal hair growth cycle resumes after the 6 month period. Therefore, sudden hair loss is usually reversible. For a more complete picture, however, you should ask your Dermatologist for advice and follow the personalized solution they will suggest.
