Male Hair Loss

According to research, many men experience hair loss at some point in their lives, and in 95% of cases, this is referred to as androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male pattern baldness.

The onset of hair loss does not follow a linear pattern, but rather occurs in a cyclical manner, with periods of relapse and stabilization. Men who consistently observe thinning in their scalp experience a decrease in both hair density and quantity, as a result of hair degeneration or gradual hair loss.

  • Etiopathogenesis of Male Hair Loss

    • Effect of Androgens on the Hair Follicle: This condition is determined from birth and is therefore inherited (damaging genes from one or both parents).
    • Stress Disorders and Psychological Factors
    • Iron Deficiency and Thyroid Issues
    • Poor Nutrition
    • Environmental Causes
    • Chronic Diseases
    • Specific Medications
    • Infections
    • Bacteria or Fungi (Tinea Capitis)

In the clinical presentation of the patient, it is observed that the hair falls out faster than normal, while new hairs grow increasingly thinner or, in the final stage, in the form of fuzz.

In the overwhelming majority of cases, hair loss is localized on the sides of the forehead and at the crown of the head, often leaving the area above the nape of the neck untouched.

  • Treatment Options for Hair Loss

Each man is different, so the skin and hair follicles may react differently to each treatment.

Today, there are medical treatments that can delay, prevent, and address androgenetic alopecia, especially when it is in the early stages.

Treatments that should be used for life:

    • Finasteride: A well-tolerated and effective treatment that works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, one of the causes of male hair loss. Its effects stop within the first six months after discontinuation.
    • Minoxidil: Applied topically on a daily basis at a 5% concentration, it significantly reduces hair loss. Side effects such as itching may cause the individual to stop the treatment.

Treatments with permanent results in a short time:

    • Laser – Hair Regeneration: Whether the hair loss is diffuse or patchy, blood flow to the scalp increases with laser use. It is based on the philosophy of photobiotherapy, resulting in increased hair length and diameter. Within a period of less than two months, results will begin to show.
    • Mesotherapy: Once the type of hair loss is determined, the appropriate multivitamin medications are chosen and injected into the problem areas. Results are visible after 8 months with no side effects.
